ZOOM SCHEDULE FOR THIS WEEK
Monday, May 25th -Whole Class Zoom @ 9:30AM
1. Introduction to EggDrop Challenge- We reviewed the force of gravity and discussed a STEM challenge for this week to create a “box” to protect an egg from breaking when dropped. We watched a short video describing how cars are built to absorb impact to protect their passengers. The documents below outline the materials and rules of our challenge as well as a place for students to draw their prototypes and record their observations. In order to limit waste, I have encouraged the students to test their prototypes without an egg and only use an egg when they want to try out their very best idea.
- Build and test out your egg drop box this week. Record your observations using the sheet below OR make videos that describe your prototypes and what happened when you dropped them

2. Adding and subtracting decimal numbers. Today we looked at adding and subtracting decimal numbers. The big idea to take away is to always make sure that your numbers are lined up correctly according to their place value. That sometimes means adding zeros after the decimal if a number doesn’t have any.
- Below is some practice for adding/subtracting decimal numbers. Grade 4s are working with decimal numbers including hundredths and grade 5s are working with decimal numbers including thousandths but students are encouraged to choose and complete the questions that you feel are at their level.

Other assignments this week to work on:
- Continue working on French creative writing
- Read your assigned French book in RAZ kids

- Try watching something in French. Retell what happened in what you watched either by writing a paragraph or by recording a video about what you saw. Don't forget to mention what show and episode you watched and to do your retell en français!
2. Problem-solving with decimal numbers.
Today we reviewed the key words we might see in a problem that would give us a clue about which operation to use. For addition, that might be words like “en total”, “la somme”, “en tout” and for subtraction, that would be words like “de plus”, “de moins” and “la différence”.
- Try solving a few of the word problems in one of the activities below. Don't forget to show your thinking and HOW you found the answer. As always, choose questions at your level! Post to SeeSaw or email it to Mme.

3. Egg Drop check-in
Today we watched a few videos posted by students in our class of some of their egg drop trials and shared some ideas about what has/hasn’t been working so far.
- Finish up your egg drop experiment this week. Don’t forget to write down your observations about your prototypes and what happened at each of your drops OR post some videos and pictures of your prototypes on SeeSaw and what happened when you dropped the egg. If you get inspired by seeing someone else’s ideas, build another prototype and try it out again.
4. A Sumdog contest for the Thompson Okanagan Region starts today and will go until Friday next week! See if you can get on the leaderboard in our area!
Friday, May 29th - Optional Open Zoom Time from 9:30-10:30AM - Bring your a pencil, a ruler and something to colour with to learn how to do some perspective drawing.
